Join us for a community celebration!
BE THERE for the class of 2026!
On August 29th, join us for coffee, bagels, and the opportunity to make a difference.
Ready Freddy is once again partnering with Pittsburgh Public Schools and the United Way of Allegheny County to celebrate the first day of kindergarten in seven neighborhood schools (see the list below to find one in your community).
Why is feeling welcome at school so important?
The transition to kindergarten is an emotional experience for all children and parents. The first day can be filled with excitement, but it can also be a little scary and overwhelming. Families who feel welcome at school are more likely to stay engaged. A celebration with the community is one way to set a positive, welcoming tone. The message is, “We welcome you! We are so excited for you! We are here to support and encourage you! Your success is important to us!”
Why is the first day of K so important?
Children who are present on the first day of school have fewer absences for the year. This matters because on-time, regular attendance in kindergarten is critical to academic success. Children who miss as few as 1-2 days a month perform worse in first grade and have lower 3rd grade reading scores. If missing school becomes a pattern that continues into later grades, children are at risk for dropping out. Yes, kindergarten matters!
What should I expect?
If you’ve never attended a first day kickoff, you’re missing out!
